Soulless
A downloadable game for Windows
You are a robot on a shattered world in the remnants of a forgotten colony. Not a soul remains on this world except the robots that were left behind. Robots who just before the humans left, were given emotions.
The game jam that this game was made for had the theme "A world without..." and I went with "a world without souls". Which takes place on a world without any humans any longer and plays with the sci-fi concept of life, sentience, and whether a complex machine can be seen to have a soul. There are also data pads sprinkled throughout the game that add additional context and backstory to what happened to lead the colony to its current state.
This is a narrative driven FPS + puzzle game. About half puzzles and half combat. The puzzles are all laser redirection puzzles similar to those found in the game Portal 2, but without portals.
Current known issues & workarounds (these issues will be fixed after the game jam has ended and I can update the game):
- It is possible to get permanently stuck in the first puzzle room if the laser redirection cubes or the player moves into another room while the doors are closing.
- There is no way to exit the game outside of the main menu. To close the game while playing you must either complete the game to be returned to the main menu, or press Alt+F4 to kill the program. My apologies for this oversight.
- During the brief outdoor puzzle after defeating the wave of security robots the laser redirection cube redirects the laser too high for a second redirection cube to reach it. To get around this, there is a pile of sand inside the small building which the first redirection cube should be placed on that will angle the laser down enough for the second cube to reach it.
- If the player leaves the building where they first meet their companion too soon, then combat music doesn't play during the following combat. Simply wait inside the building until told to leave and combat music will play during the following combat.
- When the player reaches 0 health they do not die.
- Enemy AI takes a little too long to engage the player in combat and doesn't detect the player upon taking damage if the player wasn't already detected by sight. Unintentional stealth gameplay. lol.
- On very rare occasions one of the robots in the first major combat might not finish its death cycle and will prevent the story from progressing because it has died, but for some reason not completely died. The only known workaround for this at this time is to restart the game. You may be able to progress through the rest of the game by solving the puzzle and continuing to the next part of the game, but you likely won't get all narrative dialogue or waypoint updates if you proceed without restarting the game.
